About OMI Astro

Hello everyone,

I’m Tommy, the founder of OMI Astro.

Before starting OMI, I spent nearly 20 years in the internet industry as a manager with an engineering background. Like many others, the pandemic gave me time to reflect deeply on life and purpose. By early 2023, I realized that although my job provided stability, it no longer represented the life I wanted. With my family’s full support, I made a life-changing decision — I resigned in March 2023 and, after two months of preparation, officially registered OMI OPTICS USA LLC in California on May 4, 2023.

Under this parent company, OMI Astro was born — a brand dedicated to astronomy, remote astrophotography, and optical equipment. It’s more than just a business to me; it’s the realization of a lifelong passion.

Our Journey

My fascination with astrophotography began before 2014, when I acquired my first real telescope. I’ll never forget capturing a 5-minute exposure of the Orion Nebula — it was bright, detailed, mysterious, and completely mesmerizing. That single image changed my life.

Through this hobby I met Mr. Ark, who would later become one of OMI’s key partners.
Starting from the ground up, Ark built a remarkable reputation for his integrity and business insight. In 2017, he established the Gemini Observatory in Yunnan, China — OMI Astro’s first observatory partner. At the time, I was one of his earliest clients, hosting my own astrophotography equipment there. Over time, we built not only collaboration but also mutual trust and shared vision.

What OMI Astro Does

Today, OMI Astro serves astronomy enthusiasts, universities, and research institutions worldwide through two core business lines:

1. Remote Astrophotography Services

We operate multiple remote observatories equipped with top-tier telescopes and imaging systems.
Our strengths include:
• Value for Money: Imaging with our Takahashi FSQ106 costs only $20/hour, or as low as $8/hour with a monthly subscription.
• Wide Range of Equipment: From 4-inch refractors to 17-inch CDKs, with focal lengths from 300 mm to 3000 mm — all using premium optics and sensors.
• Flexible Access Plans: Rent by imaging hours or choose monthly and annual full-access subscriptions — a rarity in the industry.
• Time-Zone Advantage: Clients in Europe and North/South America can operate our telescopes during their daytime, allowing them to enjoy their evenings with family while data is being collected on the other side of the world.

2. Retail of Premium Astronomy Equipment

In addition to remote imaging, OMI Astro has expanded into global retail of high-end astrophotography gear.
Through our online store, we offer carefully selected telescopes, mounts, cameras, filters, and accessories from leading optical brands.
We’re proud to combine our technical expertise with a deep understanding of real-world astrophotography needs, helping customers choose the right tools — whether for home setups or research-grade observatories.

Our membership and rewards program gives enthusiasts additional value through tiered discounts, cashback credits, and exclusive product releases. We aim to make professional-level astronomy more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Our Vision

At OMI Astro, our mission is to make world-class astrophotography available to everyone — whether through remote observatories, quality optical equipment, or reliable technical support.
We believe astronomy connects people with the universe and with themselves, reminding us of our shared curiosity and creativity.

If you share our passion or have ideas to collaborate, we’d love to hear from you.
Your support — whether through feedback, purchases, or partnerships — is what keeps OMI Astro growing.

Clear skies,
Tommy W.
